What’s up FGC! Isiah from the Invincible VS Community team back with another Dev Diary. Powerplex is making his electrifying debut in Invincible VS (are you shocked?)! I mean, somebody has got to make sure Invincible pays for his crimes. 

Who is Powerplex?

Former GDA scientist turned high-voltage villain, Powerplex (aka Scott Duvall) is a man tormented by grief. After his sister and niece are killed in the destruction of Chicago, Powerplex fixates on the only person left to blame: Invincible.   

I caught up with Mike Rogers, our Narrative Director, to learn more about bringing Powerplex to Invincible VS. 

“I absolutely love Powerplex. The character is so driven by guilt, hatred, and unimaginable loss, so it was important to us that players could feel that pain behind every one of his moves. Props to the VFX team too, his whole kit is exploding with energy and emotion.  

Powerplex was almost as fun for us to write as he is to play. We really tried to bring that distorted point of view to the forefront of his dialogue. Plus, his Ultimate is a great homage to one of my favorite scenes in the show. You might even say it’s electrifying (sorry, so sorry).” 

Design and Gameplay

Powerplex’s electrified air attacks and ground mobility allow him to maintain pressure and control spacing on his opponents and unleash devastating combo strings. Bau, our Lead Combat Designer, gave me the deets on Powerplex’s move set and how to come out on top with him. 

“At his core, Powerplex is a ranged character with an aptitude for getting up close and brawling with his opponent. At face value, his move set may seem traditional, but his true potential lies in his ability to power up his special attacks through timed “just frame” inputs. 

When performing a special move, a small “glint” will appear next to Powerplex at specific timing. If you double tap any attack input within a couple of frames of that timing, you’ll be rewarded with a bigger and more powerful attack. For example, Powerplex throws a projectile that when double tapped causes a pop up on hit instead of a regular reaction.  

Learning the specific timing for his special moves will give you the edge to overpower your opponent.”
