Another Dev Diary so soon?!?! Don’t worry, this isn’t a duplicate post! Isiah from the Invincible VS Community team here and I’m stoked to share more about our newly announced Fighter Dupli-Kate!  

Who is Dupli-Kate?

Taken in by the government as a child and trained as a one-woman army, Dupli-Kate eventually used her martial arts prowess to become a superhero, first as a member of Teen Team and then on the Guardians of the Globe. Although dying a thousand times over has left a toll, Dupli-Kate sees no other option than to keep pushing forward– and to fight. 

Here’s more about Dupli-Kate from our Narrative Director, Mike Rogers. 

“Dupli-Kate (respect the dash) might have the coolest powerset in the game. I’m still in awe that the team was able to make her work from a technical standpoint. It’s easy enough for me, as a writer, to pitch a bunch of Kates kicking a bad guy in the face, but it’s much harder to actually build. And yet, our end result is not only functional but a hell of a lot of fun.  

Kate’s powers mean she’s experienced death hundreds of times over– but she’s often forced to set aside that pain and keep marching forward. I think that’s a very relatable idea, and it was rewarding to get to dip into that facet of the character. 

I also really love that we got to sneak her Zero into her Ultimate, because there’s nothing more badass than dropping all the guard rails to finish out a win.” 

Design and Gameplay

Dupli-Kate is a formidable Striker in Invincible VS who can use her copies to pressure her opponents and greatly extend combos. She’s one of the most technically challenging Fighters to implement from an engineering standpoint, and the team is super proud of how she turned out! More details on her move set and gameplay hook below. 

Dupli-Kate is a high risk, high reward, high pressure character.  She has the ability to create duplicates of herself with specific charged normals and special moves to cover her approach, perform mix-ups, tack on additional hits, or even for use as literal meat shields in a pinch.  While her duplicates have great utility, they aren’t free, as she sacrifices a bit of red health each time she creates one.  

Dupli-Kate can reclaim that health if a duplicate manages to return to her, but that health is lost if it’s killed.  Utilizing her dynamic movement and creating openings with high pressure tactics is the key to Dupli-Kate’s success.
